Väsen & Hawktail brings these two groups together at long last. It is an anticipated union for fans of the genre. Väsen (Sweden) is a folk-instrumental group of epic proportion internationally. It's no secret that their music is foundational to the members of Hawktail (USA), who you may recognize from Punch Brothers, Dave Rawlings Machine, Crooked Still, and their solo projects. Together, their sound is massive, with the full range of a symphony between them. The music blends Hawktail's bluegrass and old-time roots with Väsen's traditional Swedish music, and the album features selections from both bands' catalogues as well as new tunes written for this project. This is a natural collaboration built on years of mutual admiration, in which friends unite their 36 strings to create a euphoric wall of sound.

Sophomore duo fiddle album of Lena Jonsson (Sweden) and Brittany Haas (USA)
Brittany Haas and Lena Jonsson – two of the world's most sought after and buzzworthy fiddlers and composers – have released their first duo album in nearly ten years, The Snake (out June 28 on Padiddle Records). The project follows the pair of innovative and emotive instrumentalists on a winding journey through 12 joyful and bold tunes (including 9 originals) which were written and recorded in East Nashville over two weeks in March 2023. Since their self-titled 2015 recording, they each have worked and toured with an array of critically-acclaimed acts – Hawktail, Punch Brothers, The Goodbye Girls, Lena Jonsson Trio, and many more – honing their writing, arranging, and playing skills and sharpening their points of view. The Snake is adventurous and unbridled, contained only by confidence, taste, and trust. It blends freedom and tradition, combining old-time's grit, classical’s grandeur, bluegrass’ improvisation, and Swedish folk’s groove – as only Brittany Haas and Lena Jonsson could.

Sisters Natalie (cello) and Brittany Haas (fiddle) began their musical lives together, filling their childhood home with Bach suites and Old-Time tunes alike. It was on their own, however—following divergent paths through disparate musical traditions, countries, and cultures—that they both arrived as virtuosi and composers at the highest levels of contemporary string music. Fans of acoustic music can hardly mention one without referencing the other’s work. With HAAS, these singular musicians finally record together – in duo form – for the first time.
Credited with putting cello on the map of contemporary Celtic music, Natalie brings a wealth of world influences to her instrument, fashioning a tone and rhythmic sense that transcends any single tradition. Along with her longtime collaborator Alasdair Fraser, with whom she has released seven albums, Natalie has charted a new course through the string music of Scotland, Ireland, Spain, and beyond—all without losing the influence of classical technique or her American roots, the combination of which have been on display since her earliest years, particularly in her remarkable ease in toggling between the worlds of traditional fiddle camps and Juilliard, where she studied classical performance.
Among the most influential fiddlers of her generation, Brittany has combined a world-renowned virtuosity with a musical sensibility all her own—a combination that has gained the attention, and elicited the admiration, of some of the greatest musicians in the world. Having studied under Bruce Molsky and Darol Anger, Brittany went on to join Anger’s Republic of Strings, Crooked Still, Tony Trischka and Steve Martin, Dave Rawlings Machine, and most recently her own quartet, Hawktail (formed alongside Paul Kowert, Jordan Tice, and Dominick Leslie). A mainstay of Chris Thile’s “Live From Here,” Brittany’s fiddle has made waves throughout American music, crossing genres and generations in a new approach to her instrument.
On HAAS, these two brightest lights of contemporary strings join forces as a duo all their own. It is a collaboration a lifetime in the making, and a music encompassing travels through time and through the world. From the blazing hot bow of Sami Braman comes Riveter—the debut solo record of original fiddle tunes, inventively written and masterfully performed by the traditional roots wunderkind. Known from her work with longtime Pacific Northwest string band, The Onlies, and as a member of Willie Watson’s band, here Braman celebrates the fiddle with a playful journey over the course of ten tracks that draws upon traditions from Appalachia to Ireland, Cape Breton to Norway, and beyond. Aptly named for the myriad fiddling styles Braman nimbly “rivets” together, Riveter pulses with an old-time groove throughout and Braman’s sheer joy in playing her instrument rolls off it all in waves. Within a musical tradition where fully original works are the exception, Braman sets herself apart—and her compositional chops are undeniable. Listening to “Train in the Wilderness” one can almost glimpse a steam train just as it rounds a bend somewhere deep in the Appalachian Mountains, while “Rogue River'' evokes the image of surging whitewater carving its way through a lush Pacific Northwest forest. Yet Riveter is not your ordinary old-time fare: Across the record Braman experiments with unconventional fiddling textures and rhythms that anything less than a virtuoso would fall short of pulling off. She excels in these moments, and in doing so, pushes us to imagine what traditionally-inspired folk music can be.
